I can't decide which movies or series are my favorite, so I'll just list a few that I really, really like:
    Vampire Hunter D (original)
    Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki (original OVA)
El-Hazard: The Magnificent World (also original OVA)
    Neon Genesis Evangelion
    End of Evangelion
    FLCL
    Cowboy Bebop
Cowboy Bebop: The Movie/Knockin' on heaven's door
    Blue Submarine #6
    Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz
    Death Note
    Perfect Blue
Rurouni Kenshin (TV Series and OVA)
    The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
    Blood: The Last Vampire
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (1st series and "2nd Gig")
    Akira
    Spirited Away
There's a ton more anime that I also like, but these easily fit in the top of the list...

Excellent list you've got there Johnny, as for myself the last few good ones I saw was Higurashi: When They Cry, Potemayo (which is odd for me because I tend to not watch really cute anime), and Excel Saga, which is by far the oddest series out there, a must see if you like off the wall, then through the wall humor.

now that's not true there's a anime out there that totally blows that out of the weird water they are

1. Dead leaves
2. Gurren Lagann
3. Puni Puni Pome
4. Nerima Daikon Brothers
5. Pani Poni Dash
6. Cromarti High(recommend seeing this)

that's a good number to stop on because if i where to keep going i would be here all night. Shocked

If you mean 'Puni Puni Poemi' Peter, that's just as crazy since it was directed by the same guy that did Excel Saga. I have heard some stories of Cromarte tho but haven't seen it and I can't believe I forgot about FLCL. Razz

I've seen a couple episodes of both Cromartie High and Puni Puni Poemi, I just haven't seen much more (I'm one of those rare otaku who doesn't download fansubs), but I agree, they're both pretty wacked. I used to think the same of FLCL, until I watched it a few more times and it started making a whole lotta sense from a certain perspective.

And I'd say Dead Leaves is like an anime-version of Super Jail... or perhaps it's more proper the other way around: Super Jail is a western-version of Dead Leaves. Well, whatever, they both involve ridiculous amounts of violence inside a ridiculously over-the-top prison environment, and I enjoy them both...

Favorite Anime, eh?

Okay, in no particular order, and this is just a random sampling of stuff I have / enjoyed.

-- Perfect Blue
-- .//hack/Sign
-- Magic Knight Rayearth (seaons 1 and 2)
-- Card Captor Sakura
-- Little My Maid
-- Mahoromatic
-- Devil Hunter Yohko
-- Battle Angel
-- Tenchi Muyo: OVA
-- Ai Yori Aoshi
-- 3x3 Eyes
-- Vampire Princess Miyu: OVA and the TV series
-- Bubblegum Crisis: 2040
-- Choibits
-- Elfin Lied
-- Idol Project
-- Lain
-- Paranoia Agent
-- Revolutionary Girl Utena
-- Sakura Diaries
-- Wedding Peach
-- Robotech

*Pants catching her breath*

Yeah... I know... a lot of girly anime... um... so sue me. And there's one I can't remember the name of, and it's bugging the crap out of me... Megumi Hayashibara did the main voice, and it was about a girl who acted/thought she was a robot... but was going to be like a Idol or something... and I remember like this pink-goo stuff as important too... GAH what was the name of it.

well Caroline if it helps you out i have seen almost every thing on your list

o have you seen .//hack/roots??

and robotech is actually called macross, and there are a lot of seasons to this series how far have you seen of it if you don't mind me asking?

and i would not say Elfin Lied is a girl show there's to much blood and gore in it for that.

and i love Paranoia Agent that show... how you say rocks your socks off

Well, I saw .//Hack/Sign, and the second one (which name excapes me right now), and I played through the first, four, related PS2 games... but... I kinda felt it was going the way of Tenchi Muyo in that the series was milking it for all its worth. Sometimes it's good when a story comes to a conclusion.

Well... true... um, but there is also a lot of the idea of hope and redemption... and, the sappy-mysterious ending of who is actually at the door. So... um... while it might not be a "drama" or a "romantic, girly" anime, it has a lot more dramatic elements, even while being violent. Shoot, Vampire Princess Miyu has a lot of the same sort of dark, macabre, violent images.

I guess it also helps I kinda like good horror movies too... so... um... yeah, I know... lame.

Wink Not for me. Okay "Caroline's-real-world-avatar-showing-her-age" time. For me, it'll always be Robotech. I watched it each day at like 730, right after Voltron at 700, before racing to the bus stop, so I wouldn't miss the school bus. And, it really sucked when both the shows were moved to 800 and 830, as then I could only watch them when there was a snow-delay or we had the day off. Um... I guess I must have watched like the first three seasons of it, and then I kinda trailed off of it. Um... I did pick up the entire first season of Robotech when AD Vision released it on DVD.

Shoot, I can remember the big lawsuit dealing with FASA, and who actually had the rights to use those first, tweleve, mech designs.

So, um... point being, it'll always be Robotech to me ^_^

ok i get what you are saying but hear me out on .//hack first no matter how you look at it there's a different story to each think but yes they all lead to the same thing the key of the twilight witch by the way dose exist. but when you get into roots there's a big jump in time and the only way you know is that the game has been upgraded from 1.5 to 2.5 that would put about 5 to 10 years from the originals now with that said there's a new threat called Aida and yes that's spelled correctly, oh and Kite is a bad guy in this one so it kind of turns things around a bit for the watcher

now as for robotech i remember doing the same thing you did but with out having to run to the bus stop seeing how i live right next to the school that i went to and for me it will always be robotech as well one of my friends made shur that i put that so people would understand if they where new to the series so don't feel to old k and the first season or the macross saga as it's now know as was the best then there was southern cross saga witch was still good and if you want to know where hunter went to then read the sentinels it tells all, then the masters saga witch was not as good the whole invid thing was getting old by then.

It's Robotech to me too. I know the whole Macross/Mosepeda and all that. But I never got into any of the other Macross stuff I watched. And really with the Shadow Chronicles I think Robotech can be considered its own beast now. Man I wanted a cyclone when I was a kid.

Other favorites
the Original Bubblegum Crisis and AD Police
Cowboy Bebob and the movie
Samurai Champloo
Berserk
Bastard was fun
Big O
Go Gai Gar
Ninja Scroll
Miyazaki's stuff is almost always great

The works of Hayao Miyazaki and Satoshi Kon are my meat. Katsuhiro Otomo would be third place.

HELLSING OVA hands down. Seen this thread a few times in the past, my answer never changes. Go on youtube Watch Hellsing OVA 5, find the english dubbed version. When you see the scene with a Nazis vampire with a 5 month old baby in its mouth, WHOA AWSOME, that's what takes it over the edge and makes it "THE BEST"

I suggest for you to go to youtube and type in Helling OVA 1 english dubbed, and watch it, then Hellsing OVA 2 english dubbed, then 3, then 4, and then 5 which is english sub titled. It'll blow your mind. It's gorey has a GREAT plot and one cool ass main character, the Vampire Alucard.

I saw the OVA's a few months ago (close to Halloween now that I remember), and this is one hell of a series. Alucard is one of the epitomies of badassery.

F***kin Aye Bro. Razz He's never funny, well in a twisted way. evil as sin, deadly as Death itself, and LOVES killing, mocking, embaressing, and terrorizing people before he kills them. I've yet to see any kind of anime character that comes close to his level of dementia and death dealing. Now as for this "Guyver" *thinks* "I'll take a look into it" *Heads to Veoh to see if I can find it dubbed and looking crisp.
