Torrent file question

I have a file that i downloaded from a torrent. I ran a virus scan on it, and it's safe. Sad thing is I can't open it. It says, "Windows cannot open this file."

To open this file, Windows needs to know what program created it. Winsows can go online to look it up automatically, or you can manually select from a list of programs on your computer.

It goes on to say: What do you want to do?

1) Use the Web service to find the apprpriate program
2) Select the program from a list

this is the only thing I've downloaded from a torrent, and I really would like to open it. It's the complete version of Q vs Spock. 2 hours of logical and funny psycobabble nonsense. I've never seen it before. I tried the windows search, but it takes me to something called UroCure, I'm probably wrong on its name. I think it's because my computer isn't up to date on something called "registry" if anybody with knowledge in this field who can open torrent files easily and safely can tell me where to go and what to get, I'd be greatly appreciated. Oh and I downloaded it from I think Torrent Reactor, hope that helps too.

P.S. "A program that can open it that is 'safe' and 'free' is what I meant

Wait, have you just downloaded the torrent file? You need BitTorrent to actually download the file itself... I should have asked that first...

Sorry it took so long for the reply, soon after I posted this, I got a call saying I was supposed to be at work at 4:45pm, and it was already 6pm. Long story short, I was pissed, but didn't get in any trouble. I'm ok. Anyway, How would I find out if it was avi or those other things. I went to it, selected properties, but found nothing of the sort. Plus enlighten me, what it bit torrent, I keep hearing this, but I don't know what to do. If you use torrents, did your comp already come equipped with the ability to open them? Or did you go somewhere, download a FREE program, run it, and open your file? PLZ tell me how you got it done, I just want to open this one thing. WAAA

*facepalm* Okay, sorry, I should have realized...

Torrent files are basically only useful if you have BitTorrent or some other similar program. Just google "BitTorrent" and you should find links to dowloading various versions of the program (the most obvious being http://www.bittorrent.com). The little torrent file is basically all the information about the file you want to download, so when you find a file ending with .torrent in its name, that's a torrent file. You use BitTorrent or a similar program to open the torrent file, which will allow your computer to communicate with other computers that have the file you're looking for or are currently in the midst of dowloading it themselves. BitTorrent sort of lets you download chunks of files from numerous other users at a time, so you'r not actually downloading off of a single server or something like that.

Also, about .avi, that's a file extension (or the thing at the end of a file's name) for a type of movie file. It's like .jpg or .gif for image files, or .wav or .mp3 for sound and music files. The file extension should always be attached to the file name (like "Q_vs_Spock.avi" or something). Keep in mind there are numerous types of movie files, many of which may require their own seperate player.

LOL, that was like the best reply ever. You sound so freaked out, LOL. Sorry if I scared you, most likely I didn't, its just that no one in this town ever explained to me what bit torrent was, they said Oh u need bit torrent. But when I asked them where, they where clueless. By the way I live in the DUMBEST town in America. I'm the only smart one here. Oh if I just had 30 billion dollars, then I'd buy this town, making it into the worlds biggest parking lot, because its all it desearves to be, and to rid its stench from existence, I gotta escape... MUST...PASS... COLLEGE ARGH
