My computer has been running slowly lately. I am unaware as to why this has been going on. It has been happening for a few weeks. A couple of things have been suggested to me to fix this problem; none of which made any noticeable difference.
At one particular point my laptop was freezing up and I attempted to restart it. When it started I was greeted with a black screen and the words "A disc read error has occured. press ctrl + alt + del to restart". This is as far as I could get.
I am now borrowing my sister's laptop. However, because it does not have wireless the only way I can access the net is to connect it with the ethernet cable which is short and in an awkward location. In other words, I can get on the net, but not sit on it all day as I usually do.
But I'm sure this snippet of good news will not make people jump for joy. *looks at Caroline* _________________

A quick question Silv, Have you ever defraged your pc. Also have you been makeing copys becuase i have three thoerys as to what is happening. A: your hard drive is way to fragmented, thus takeing a long time to find most data. B: you could have been hit by a virus, some viruses just eat resorces makeing PCs slow down to a crawl. or C: your harddrive may be on it's last legs and may just about to be kaput. |

Defragging was one of the things suggested to me. I did defrag my comp and it had no effect. 2. I wouldn't be surprised if it was a virus. My computers seem to attract a lot of those 3. The harddrive, like the rest of the laptop, isn't even a year old, so the fucker better not be on its last legs. However, it was explained to me that the problem might be a "hard error". I was told this more or less meant the hard drive has had a chunk taken out of it. Not sure if this was a literal reference or not, but I'm guessing that either way it esentialy means my hard drive is fucked.
I gotta wait till Tuesday to ring them back and find out if they have found anything. _________________

It could be viruses. Thats why it pays to purchase a decent anti-virus software program. I personally use Trend. _________________

Its alot easier to use alot of them lately. All I had to do with mine is install it, then let itself update, restart, then do a scan and it does the rest. _________________

It is a good idea to keep the files that you want to keep safe, backed up on a seperate drive. I keep all of the files that i dont want to go through the trouble refinding and redownloading, on an external USB hard drive.

That is true, my dad has been keeping his data lately in a separate partition just in case something went awry. _________________

In my experience having a back-up on the same harddrive but different partition is a very bad idea cause if the harddrive stops working you won't be able to read ether partition and your back-up is useless and unreadable. i suggest buying an external harddrive for around $120 instead of waiting for the inevitable and spending at least $1500 on data recovery |

Yeah, but my dad thinks he knows everything and won't listen to the basic functions of external hard drives. _________________

Very true, but it does'nt take much to say that using a computer only takes a little bit of training and some common sense to even keep these things running. _________________

My laptop hard drive is literally... fucked.
It's not going ot cost me between $200 and $400 to have the 360GB hard drive replaced and the backup uploaded onto it.
I really hate computers. _________________
