Sounds interesting, but the singing felt... off. I don't know why, its just I can't shake this feeling there is something wrong.

I believe it's possible, but TV appearances don't necessarily mean the person can actually do it (Ashlee Simpson anyone?). So, I figured I'd just add an article that explains the mechanics of it.

I haven't used mine as much, but when I first got into the high school chorus, the use of my falsetto made me think I could be an alto, but settled for trying tenor. After struggling with being betwen my falsetto range and actual range, it wasn't long before I found myself singing in the bass section. Had I spent years working on fine-tuning the use of my falsetto and the transition into it, I'm sure I could accomplish fairly similar feats, though likely of lesser quality.
