Yes, Reach is set before almost all previous Halo games (all except Halo Wars). That is why some vehicles and weapons are absent. Forge World is a bit smaller than implied, but compared to other maps, from any of the games, it is massive.
As for the timeline, I, personally, don't believe the Pillar of Autumn went directly from Reach to Instillation 04 (the first Halo ring). The Reach campaign ends near the end of August 2552 and the PoA found Instillation 04 in 2552 at, as far as I know, no actual indicated point of th year. When they first arrived, the discussion between Keyes, Cortana and Master Chief implies that they have been fighting together for a period of time to get to know each other. There are still a few months in the year, and the Pillar of Autumn, along with Master Chief, Cortana and Captain Keyes could have seen a lot of activity in that time, before finding Halo.
There are still a lot of unkowns with the storyline concerning the relationship between Cortana and Master Chief. That is why I am letting the "inaccuracies" slide, because there is still room for them to slide into place happily. Sorry, I can be a stickler for details and it tends to bug me when people make sequels and prequels that contradict the previous instalments of the story, movie, book, game or otherwise. It's bad enough when someone else makes these mistakes, but it's just sad when it's the original creators making them.

Silv, you have to realize that some weapons and vehicles seen (With the exception of a few select human weapons based off the improved graphics. The Chopper for one, was in Halo Wars, and I felt that it should not have been removed. As for the story, it is very accurate as I am a nut about those things. The plausibility of what occured with the PoA certainly fit since MC was in Cryo during the events.

What bridge are you talking about?
OK, Rune. Let my just explain a couple of things that you seem to have skimmed over while reading my post.
1. I did not at any point state that Reach's point in the timeline was the cause of all absences of weapons and vehicles. Only some. Who's to say the choppers were not deployed elsewhere? The path taken through the majority of the campaign actually leaves very little room for even a Mongoose to manoeuvre, let alone a Chopper. It's a big planet and we see little of it. Over half the campaign is spent inside a building or other enclosed space.
2. I did not doubt the plausibility of the events in Reach. I do not have enough information on the Covenant war. In fact, as far as I can tell, there is little information at all. That is why I said that I was letting the "inaccuracies" (note the quotation marks. I can't think of any other word to describe the little tid bits that I notice.) slide. As I said before, there are a lot of unknowns in the entire storyline. Plenty of room for certain details to fit into place.
As for you, xivk, I can give you real spoilers if you want. The fact that you see Dr. Halsey and the Pillar of Autumn are hardly spoilers worth getting worked up over. So what, you see people and things. If I am going to post a spoiler worth not reading, I will say so. The fact that seeing her and it reveals nothing of the storyline. So shut up and quit bitching about nothing.

Thaswee the books come in silvador if you read the first book in the series The fall of reach it is a very clear backstory to the events of the game and thats where you willg et your answers. so break out those reading glasses and read silvador its a very good book with in depth story line. and will give you a better understanding of the history between cortana John(Masterchief) and Dr Hasley

I need to actually find the books first. Where I live doesn't exactly have a very large bookstore within an hour's drive.  And as for ordering them, I have other priorities at the moment. I have considered getting the books, but they are just not high on the list right now.
Dr. Halsey's diary will just have to suffice, for now.
