Aaaaaaargh!

Someone sent me this stupid riddle, but they don't know the answer.

It's driving me nuts trying to figure it out!

Can anyone help:

"One man has six of them, two men have 8.
If women have them, they are halved.
If children use them, they have 18.
I have none, but you have several.
They are red at day and black at night."

Does anyone know the answer? pleasepleasepleaseplease... Rolling Eyes

Maybe I'm just retarded, but why is it that '8' and '18' are the only numbers that aren't spelled out?

Not sure about the 8 and 18. I guess it might have some significance.

Also "red at day" is a really weird way of describing something. Surely most people would say "red during the day"?

Or maybe I've just been staring at this stupid thing for too long...

I did a google on the riddle and came across a few solutions...

One person suggested that the answer is "no answer":

Quote:
The ‘answer’ is obvious. There IS no answer.

“One man has six, two men have 8.” One man will give you six different answers to the same question. If two of them are involved, you’ll probably have even more.

“If women have them, they are halved” If women ever answer you, they only give you half the answer, you’re supposed to ‘read between the lines’ for the other half.

“If children use them, they have 18.” Children are even more creative and will come up with a lot more different possible answers. But they probably lost interest before the question was even finished being asked.

“I have none, but you have several” I, this riddle, don’t HAVE an answer, its a mind game, but you probably came up with several close answers answers anyway.

“They are red at day and black at night”. If they, whoever it is, doesn’t have an answer for you, you’ll be embarrassed if you ask them at day be be ‘red’. If they don’t have an answer at night they’ll probably either hide or sneak in, under the cover of ‘black’.

So the answer is there is no answer or no answer. You may congratulate me by sending me large sums of money. Thank you.

Another person said "syllables"

Quote:
“One man has six of them” six syllables

“Two men have 8” four syllables, doubled -> ‘8’

“If women have them, they are halved.” men is one syllable, woMEN splits the syllable in half (creating two syllables)

“If children use them, they have 18.” nine syllables (‘18’ / 2)

“I have none, but you have several.” The riddle is given to you; I have no syllables and you have ‘several.’

“They are red at day and black at night.” Words are read (phonetically red) at day and unreadable (black) at night.

Your Welcome

Another person on a forum said clothing sizes...
Sim wrote:

I have a store that is still run by family over in Kingwood, so my thought was that it had something to do with clothing sizes.

A man has six sizes of shirts, ranging from S-XXXL.

Larger men have 2 larger sizes.

Women's sizes come in halves.

Children have around 18 sizes, depending on the manufacturer.

The rest you can pretty much kick to the curb...a riddle won't have clothing, but we will...and a label can be read (red) at day, but not at night without the aid of light.

So eh. I was bored.

Hope this eases your mind....

Okay... I came across some other leads....

This one is rather interesting... "Islamic Rights"...

cygnus wrote:
it has to be Islamic rights, children are given 18 rights in
Saudi Arabia constitution, but women have half the rights of
men under some socities, Muslim men have the basic 6 rights
when meeting another, and i see reference to Eight Rights
groups dealing with interaction between people as well,
though in a consumer sense? That doesn't address why rights
would be black at night or "only read during the day" so to
speak

I also tried immigration laws, with VISAs expiring after 6
years and children having 18 years to declare citizenship if
they have the grounds for it, but that isn't even remotely
close

Somebody else suggested that it is a spanish/portuguese riddle that got translated.... So it (the answer) might not really work out in English... Being that it will only make sense in the original language it came from...

Any spanish/portuguese readers here?
