Oh, dear God, not another trite morality play about how corporations are evil and how nasty humanity is for having the temerity to want to build and make things of metal and polymer. And how the Noble Savages defeat the products of a millennium of industrial-military complex and martial tradition using sticks and arrows. Makes my head hurt...
Living in 'harmony' with nature means letting it eat you and then you become one with the earth via the expedient of some other creatures' bowel movements.

Hey, that worked in Star Wars, too (Ewoks destroying AT-ST mechs with swinging tree logs )
Actually even in our modern times it is possible to live in "harmony with nature". The industry just has to develope new technologies that polute the environment less/use less raw materials etc.
I just love people who like to discuss with me about the "Evil Industries". Almost everytime I can close the discussion with: "So you don't like what they do? No? So that means you don't like their products? Fine, then give me your clothes, your cell phone, your car, your central heating ...."
Mankind DID some damage to the environment, that's for sure. But there are scientist that doubt that we are the only ones responsible for the global warming. There are too many factors that can influence the climate (as far as I can remember they made some measurements that the world temperature even dropped a little in a certain period, and as this was hardly explainable they hesitated to publish this) _________________ click here |

Just think of it as Dances With Wolves in a sci-fi seting, and you will be fine. Also, the whole reason they wanted the spot is becuase it is full of a natural resorce that the home planet needs badly. So it is natural to not use a nuke, becuase trying to send miners to a place cramed to the gills in nuke fallout is mass law sutes and labor strikes waiting to happen. |

Haven't yet seen the movie, but will definitely do so soon. Wasn't really much interested in it from the start, but after a while I thought, hey, why not just check it out... ^^ _________________ http://www.vanjas-world.com |

I'm just back from the cinema. I just added it to my "Want-it-on-DVD-2010" List it was fantastic. I'm curious if they make a sequel, the end is quite open
I think I'll watch it again with my friends who couldn't make it today ^^ the landscape was so beautiful ... ( one second in of the movie = one hour of rendering) _________________ click here |

Im thinking, theres a high chance of a sequel since some of the remaining humans went back. They may retry to come back with a stronger force, in which case....the Na'vi are screwed. _________________ http://forums.pleasurebonbon.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=238903#238903- Wolf & Grimm!

Aye, Chief Wellwater, but we run the risk of blowing a plot hole into ever larger sizes until it consumes all of science fiction.
In all seriousness, I just wish I could see a sci-fi movie that had a plot besides thinly veiled leftist posturing or inane alien invasions. You know what? I'm gonna rewrite the plot to Avatar without ever having seen it and make it more interesting than the real thing in five minutes. Ready? Time me!
First off, improve human motivations. None of this 'Unobtainium' junk. Give them a resource with a purpose known to the audience! Say... materials needed to build clean fusion reactor power sources to overhaul our own ecology destroying energy infrastructure. So now instead of just 'raping alien world for fun and profit' we got 'choose to save our world by harming another world.' Much better! Easy change, yes? But wait, there's more!
How about we make the natives actually interested in learning about and/or from these alien visitors? Instead of just brushing them off, knowing for certain that their 'ancient' customs are the end all, be all of sentient existence? You know, some of them might find this whole "tool-making" and "building shelter" thing an awesome idea. Or even just trying to trade lore and stories? Maybe even open the, admittedly remote, possibility of trade!
Hey, now we can get into the wonderful and delightful problems of *is* it a good idea to give technologies and ideas to a culture who didn't go through a long and painful development process to get them? Would they be a future danger if advanced? Or would they be likely to destroy themselves? Should we not care, just happily buying up our dreadfully needed materials and bolt? Or look for a long-term investment in nurturing and befriending them? Would they resent the mining operations taking things they don't truly know the value of and doing some ecological harm to their planet?
See? Not so hard at all. You could write a decent novel series from all of those plot ideas and their resulting corollaries. A fascinating movie with only a couple, still including beautiful locations, alien biologies, and the tragedy of interstellar conflict. _________________ "Doktor! Are you sure this will work?!" Well kommy...
The movie does have a bit of an 'obvious' plot but the thing is, its a natural reaction.
The people there were still in an evolutionary process if i do say so myself,, because they were hunters and barely knew anything about technology.
Im not what to say on the ubnobtanium department because i also don't know much of its uses but, the fact remains that Human greed took over they're rational thinking, creating a good complot. Yes they did have a stupid chance to just nuke the place, but then again, why didn't they?
It creates good story for the viewer because the general masses frankly don't give a damm about what goes on, they just care a bout a good movie with action, drama and anything else in between. _________________ http://forums.pleasurebonbon.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=238903#238903- Wolf & Grimm!

Admiral Fuchs, I hate to completely disregard normal safety policies and SOPs, and endanger the entire science fiction universe, but I have to ask these two questions.
One... okay, we've got the ability to travel between star-systems... gyro-stabilized exo-skeleton powered-armor able to survive the recoil of a 25mm gatling-rifle, and VTOL combat aircraft... but we can't build a pair of cybernetic legs for that poor marine? I mean... wasn't there a show back in the 1970s about some guy being remade into a bionic wonder that cost like... 6 million US dollars or something... or maybe I'm thinking about some 1970s show about a female tennis star who was remade with bionic implants? Or maybe it was just about every comic-book superhero or Palladia system I'm thinking about where you could get cybernetic implants.
Or... even if we can't make him some cybernetic legs, couldn't we give him prosthetic legs? I mean... we make legs all the time for those powered-armor-exo-skeletons... would it really be that difficult to make them for a normal-sized guy? Seriously. It's like what... the year 4000? And the poor guy is rolling around in a wheelchair? Weren't wheelchairs from like... the 1500s? *shrug* I guess it's kinda neat that wheelchairs have withstood the test of time and all but... really... couldn't we make him some mechanical legs?
And... question two... we've got medical facilities on this drop ship that can grow an alien organism all the way to its adult life-cycle stage. We can then implant said organism with a complete personality copy of one of our marines... a complete "brain-swap" if you will... but we can't grow a pair of legs for a parapalegic marine? Seriously? We can grow exact copies of aliens without any problems... but we can't grow a pair of legs?
*Braces for the impact of the science-fiction universe implosion*
((And... just two more reasons why "Avatar" is... going to blow for me when I get dragged to see it.)) |

actually i can answer this for you without ruining too much. Yes the tech is there, but it's really expensive, and you can't afford in on DAV benefits. _________________ My Fursona(updates occasionally) http://forums.pleasurebonbon.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=7537

Now that i have seen the movie i would like to show some points of interest.
A)The Avatar program was ment for two things, to get the Navi that lived in the big huge tree to move to some wher else, or if negotiations failed, to learn about the Navi in order to find ther weakneses.
B) The white collar villan that make the pay checks that the jar head grunts work for stated, "Investors hate needless bloodshed, but they hate loseing money even more."
So In a way, Nukes are out seens aside from a millitary stand point you have to think of it in a corperate light. With our age of instant news and instant reaction, droping a nuke (out side of a last resort) would have the corperat heads and investors dealing with large scale protests and posible boycots back home, And from what i learned from the health care reform debate paper pushers and politictans hate dealing with protests.
C) the main charicters army health benafits didnt cover the surgery needed to let him walk agean. But seens his twin brother (who got killed in a mugging.) was part of the program and each avatar body was very pricey they taped him on the shoulder and made him an offer he couldnt refuse at the time. |
