Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe FAQ
*NOTE: This is the last version of the FAQ BEFORE the release of Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe. Another, Final, version will follow the release of the game to cover all the secrets released, strategies, combos, fatality combinations, and any other general information. Afterwards, there might be an Ultimate version of the final MK vs DC FAQ, which will be made to organize the information of the original post-release FAQ.

Current Storyline information:
This game is not canon, it is not a part of the series' storyline, however, if it were in the MK timeline, it would take place between MK 2 and MK 3.
The storyline for the game will be written by comic book veterans Jimmy Palmotti (Monolith, 21 Down, Painkiller Jane) and Justin Gray (Jonah Hex, Crisis Aftermath: The Battle for Bludhaven, JLA Classified). The DC universe will take place in modern day.
The limited edition of MK vs DCU will include a comic illustrated by Mortal Kombat co-creator, John Tobias.
Storyline:
When a cataclysmic force merges conquerors from two universes, conflict is inevitable. Kombat forces friends to fight, worlds to collide, and unlikely alliances to be forged. In order to save all they know, the heroes and villains of Mortal Kombat must wage war against the combined might of the DC Universe. How can either side prevail when rage blinds them to the dark threat poised to destroy them all?
MK vs DCU will feature a story mode from two different perspectives, one from the DC side, and one from the MK side. Ed Boon mentioned that the DC characters will see the MK characters as the invaders, and vice-versa.

Current character information and renders:
The character count is currently 22 characters total. Half the cast will be MK and half will be DC. Ed Boon said that the most "iconic" characters from MK and DC will appear. Ed Boon reaffirmed that no new MK or DC characters will appear. There will be character cameos, some of those characters are NPC
(Non-playable characters), however, some may end up being unlockable or downloadable, but that has yet to be decided.
The Boss of the game will be two characters merged together. It has been revealed that this boss will be Darkseid and Shao Kahn merged together, resulting in a character named "Dark Kahn". Darkseid and Shao Kahn are playable separately. Dark Kahn, however, will not be playable.
Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Sonya, Shang Tsung, Liu Kang, Kitana, Jax, Kano, Baraka, Raiden, and Shao Kahn, have been confirmed for the MK side, and Batman, Flash, Superman, Catwoman, The Joker, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, Deathstroke, Shazam, Lex Luthor, and Darkseid, are confirmed for the DC side.

----------------------------------------------------------
Downloadable Character Possibility:
Ed Boon mentioned that in the future he'd like to have downloadable content that may include additional arenas, alternate costumes, or other characters. It seems this possibility is very likely, as it has been discussed in some of the latest videos.
----------------------------------------------------------
Arena Information
There will be various MK and DC arenas. Some arenas may be actual mergers of two arenas from both universes. Known merged arenas include Themyscira and Shang Tsung's Island, and Dark Kahn's Palace.
Currently known MK Arenas: Graveyard, Netherealm, Wu Shi Academy, Lin Kuei Temple Exterior, Outworld Exterior, Edenia Exterior, Special Forces Base, OA, Raiden's Temple.
Currently known DC Arenas: Batcave, Metropolis, Fortress of Solitude, Gotham City streets, Gotham Rooftops, Metropolis.
----------------------------------------------------------
Gameplay
Freefall Kombat: Tied in part to stage interaction, this mode is a player initiated sequence which is kicked off by you flinging your opponent off a stage. Unlike previous games you won't just follow them down or watch yourself drop. Instead the camera will come in and you'll be able to fight on the way down. You'll have a slightly tweaked set of possible attacks in this mode, much like Klose Kombat. Characters will also have special moves during Freefall kombat. At least one per character is expected.
Klose Kombat: This is a mode you'll initiate which pulls the camera in close and has its own separate mechanics. Basically, when you initiate the mode you'll be the aggressor and your opponent will be on defense. In this closer view you'll be able to attack your foe's upper body with different types of blows for a set period of time, namely five attacks, the exact duration of which is still being ironed out. To keep things fair, your opponent will be able to perform a number of different defensive moves to dodge your attacks and end Klose Kombat, provided they're fast.
Klose Kombat won't have special moves, but characters will have unique fighting style, Catwoman, for example was mentioned to scratch the opponent's face.
Rage Meter: Each character will have a rage meter, just underneath their health meter. You build your rage meter by taking and dealing damage, or by blocking opponent strikes. As the meter fills up, you can either use breakers to knock away an attacking opponents, or if you let the rage meter build up completely, however, you can enter rage mode (by pressing the shoulder buttons). Here, you'll have roughly six seconds to deal as much damage as possible. Your attacks will be more powerful and, more importantly, unblockable so, as long as you can make contact. Also, when you are being attacked, your damage animations are turned off, this way you can walk up to your opponent even if they are throwing projectiles at you.
General Fighting: For general fighting, attacks and special moves will be open-ended, players will be able to create their own combos rather than bashing out buttons etched deep in the memory. Ducking and jumping and flip kicks have a bigger role now, and there is much more attention on special moves.
Special Moves: Each character will have about five to seven special moves. The Midway team is trying to add another layer of gameplay within the special moves themselves. With Superman’s heat laser, you keep mashing buttons and you get a power charge at the end. With the ground pound, it has the initial hit in it, but there’s a very small window right when the fist hits the ground where if you press the button again, it will chain another hit into it. A lot of special moves will have elements like that. These are referred to as "Pro Moves".
Arena Destruction and Interaction: You can throw your opponent through walls, and off of high places, and into other parts of the arena. There will be no stage fatalities or deathtraps mid-round. This time around you will have to beat your opponent to death.
Story Mode: MK vs DCU will feature a story mode from two different perspectives, one from the DC side, and one from the MK side. Ed Boon mentioned that the DC characters will see the MK characters as the invaders, and vice-versa. Each side of the story mode was quoted as likely taking 2 1/2 hours to 3 hours to complete. So 5 or 6 hours to complete it entirely.
The ending parts of the story mode is quoted as "MADNESS" with "EVERYONE". There is no other information related towards this elusive hint. What it means is anybody's guess.
The Story mode is broken into character-specific chapters. You'll play as the Flash for a while, meet Batman, and eventually switch to the Batman chapter. There will many cutscenes.
No Mini-Games: This game will not include any elements of previous games. No Konquest, and no Puzzle, motor, or chess Kombat
Finishing Moves: There will be Fatalities, but they will not be gory, for example, no decapitations. Only MK characters and DC villains can perform fatalities, while DC heroes, who don't necessarily kill, will sport brutalities. These finishers function like fatalities, but aren't actually lethal.
----------------------------------------------------------
Graphical Details:
As a result of attacks, masks will shatter, and clothes will tear revealing scarred skin and wounds gained during battle.
An early game build that was tested showed a beaten and bloody Superman, but “Lead Character Artist” Luis Mangubat admitted that the build had not been approved by DC yet. MK character damage levels will go far beyond DC’s, with Sub-Zero’s and Scorpion’s mask being able to be shattered as an example. There is a gameplay shot of Scorpion without his mask, his upper half head still has the “human skin” on it, but the bottom half is all skeleton, no lips and no nose.
While there will be blood, the game will be rated "T", however, Midway is looking to push the "T" rating as close to "M" as possible without crossing the line.
They go into pretty good detail of the character builds, they seem very proud of it. Every material in the game was built to act independently from everything else. They have different properties for each material used, such as, leather, satin, skin, metal, plastic; each one with it’s own defined weight and light reflective property.
MK vs DCU will utilize the Unreal 3 engine, as well as original code developed by Midway. The game will be released this fall for PS3 and Xbox 360. There is no unreal 3 engine for Nintendo Wii, however Ed Boon states that he has no problem with MK vs DCU for the Wii if it can be done.
----------------------------------------------------------
Questions and Answers:
How could anyone stand against Superman?
Due to the universal merger storyline, he is weakened by the magic effects, making him a balanced character. One thing that is not known to some people is that Superman's weakness is not limited to Kryptonite, he can also be weakened by magic.
Who came up with the MK vs DC concept?
Midway's Marketing team knew people at DC and discussed it with them. When DC agreed, the idea was presented to Ed Boon who, after some deliberation, agreed to the idea. So it was Midway who began the crossover.
What about the next MK game?
Ed Boon stated he fully intends to make the next MK an M-Rated game thats just MK. His intention is to have multiple franchises running side-by-side, the VS. games and the MK games to be released together. He further stated this game was not his original intention, but his desire to make a crossover outweighed any drawbacks this game presented.
----------------------------------------------------------
There will be.....
There will be blood and fatalities. Though DC hero characters don't actually kill, so they will sport brutalities which seriously injure, but don't actually kill, the opponent. The final count for fatalities hasn't been figured out yet, they are still adding that content, but because its part of their focus, that's where a majority of effort will go to.
There will be Easter Eggs and rendered endings in Arcade mode.
The "Toasty Guy" might appear.
Each character will have there own unique fighting stances and attacks.
There will be special content and additional content like in the collector's edition. There won't be a Krypt per se, but they will have methods of hiding things. Most, if not all, hidden stuff will appear in the story mode.
There will be a strong online component. There will be a chat room-like gathering place to challenge folks and here about match results. There will be leaderboards. There will also be awards and/or trophies.
Extra content, stuff like the commercials, etc, will be in the game.
There might be DLC (Downloadable content). Ed Boon and the Midway team are looking into it.
----------------------------------------------------------
There will not be.....
Aside from Brutalities and Fatalities, no other finishing move will be in MK vs DC.
There will not be platform specific characters, it would've p***ed people off and it would've hindered the story.
There will be no environmental Fatalities. No deathtraps, no stage fatalities.
Smoke was quoted as "probably not" being in the game.
Kreate-A-Fighter will not be included in this game.
Mortal Kombat vs. Marvel? "It's not in the planning."
The game is not coming to the PS2 or Wii.
No in-game weapons.
There are no plans to bring MK back to the arcades.
2 on 2 Kombat will not appear.
It is unlikely alternate costumes will appear, considering this quote from Ed Boon: "A character will appear different if both players pick the same character". Most likely characters will be palette swapped.

I played MK vs. DC at the London MCM Expo last weekend. It's excellent, though I didn't do very well myself (I was using an XBox, but I'm a PS man really, so not used to XBox controls). _________________ Wow, sarcasm! That's original. |

Yes it is. It was announced almost six months ago. Which pretty shocked the hell out of everyone who plays games.
I'll reserve judgment until reviews and word of mouth. Though it does have potential. And Midway needs some positive things to happen given their struggles in sales recently.
But where is my damn Marvel vs. DC fighting game!?!?!? |

Just a quick little correction... the character's name is Captain Marvel, not Shazam. "Shazam!" is the magic phrase he utters to transform into Captain Marvel, and the name of the wizard to gives him his powers. The only reason for the confusion (which happens alot) is due to the fact that the comic book is named "Shazam!", which I believe was done to avoid any lawsuits from Marvel Comics (who also have their own "Captain Marvel" character, or Mar-Vell). _________________ Johnny's Fanfics (including Sureshot!
