I made this thread so that everyone could post a little bit about thier favorite animal so that they could share some interesting information with everyone else.

http://www.statesymbolsusa.org/IMAGES/Texas/armadillo_380.jpg

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dIUC5eGMsFY

some interesting armadillo facts:
- Armadillo means "little armored one" in Spanish.

- The armadillo can not survive in areas where the soil is too hard.

- Armadillos have short legs but can move quite quickly, and have the ability to remain underwater for as long as six minutes. Because of the density of its armor, an armadillo will sink in water unless it inflates its stomach with air, which often doubles its size and allows it to swim across narrow bodies of water

- Armadillos can eat up to 40,000 ants in one meal.

- Armadillos sleep over 17 hours a day.

- The armadillo is the state mammal of Texas.

- Armadillos can carry leprosy. They can also carry rabies.

- When threatened by a predator, the three-banded armadillo can roll up into a ball.

- The average armadillo's lifespan is 12 to 15 years.

- When an armadillo gives birth it gives birth to identical quadruplets.

Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

as the white tiger is also my favorite, i beleive i can help you on that one.

for instsance, one out of every three tigers born is a white tiger.

and two out of every five white tigers is a male.

most white tigers are found in the bengal tiger blood line, though some have been known to pop up in others.

when fully grown, the white tiger is slightly wider and a few inches taller than his orange furred cousin.

well i would put more but this all i had time for. Very Happy

My favorite animal is just a common housecat. Cats might not be as exotic as other animals, but I find them to be fun and loving animals.

I sometimes miss having a cat. Especially when looking at videos or pictures of cats or kittens.

My favorite animal is Dolphins. I just love their feature and how they jump so elegantly through the big Sea. Every time I dream about them, imagine myself on a boat, watching many, many dolphins, leaping out of the water so beautifully with little droplets of water shining down like little diamonds as the sun going down, It makes me smile and feel so alive. *sigh*

I have several favourite animals, though tigers are my ultimate favourite (regardless of colour), closely followed by cheetahs, wolves, foxes, dolphins, orcas, peregrine falcons and golden eagles. I can't think of any interesting facts right now apart from that peregrine falcons are the fastest living creatures.

i think i can help you out there, tad.

lets see, i already did tigers.........but only white........oh,i know, the largest family of tigers is the siberian, weighing in at almost 500 pounds.
they are a loner animal, leaving their children to fend for themsevles as soon as they learn to hunt, and are weeened.
the father, in some families of tigers, leave the mother after she has given birth.

cheeahs......hmmmm.....thats actually a very interesting feline.
cheeahs, thgough not the biggest feline, is certainly the fstest, clocking in at around 55 to 60 miles an hour.
they live in the central areas of africa.
and store their food high up in trees.
another little known fact about cheetahs is that they are a branch off of the cougar family.
the spots on their fur, like all animals, is never the same on any two coats, and are better at camoflouge than the lion.

wolves are fun too........
a wolf pack can consist of many wolves. there is an alpha male, alpha female, two beta wolves, the cubs, and then the sikla, or weakest of the group.
a pack of wolves cares for all members of it's pack, including the sikla, and will almost never leave the weakest behind. thgey have been recorded to travel at the slowest party members speed, so as not to lose him. and will wait for him if h e falls.

foxes i think is a subject my friend can delve into more than i can, but i'll try.
foxes, believe it or not, can fit into any opening it can fit its nose into. large or small.
there are around 23 different families of fox in the animal kingdom.
and foxes were one of the first to be worshiped as gods.

dolphins are a little simpler.
dolphins are the only other animal on earth, other than humans, with a class four inteligence, lacking only the ability to use speech.
they are one of the few races of animal to mate with like genders.
and were once believed by sea drunk sailors to be the mythical meremaids.
their echo location is a series of clicks that they also use as a form of comunication.

orcas.....there are some nasty buggars.
known for their voracious appetite, and antagonistic behavior, the orcas you find at sea world are pampered compared to the ones you find in the ocean.
orcas are a carnivorous sea animal, eating anything from fish to sea lions.
they are found mostly around the antartic circle, and are in danger of becoming extinct due to illeagal whaling.

yea, pereguine falcons are the fatest recorded animal, but there is mor to it than that, unfortunatly, without looking it up, i cannot tell you more than that.

same with the golden eagles..........heh...sorry*sweatdrop*

Oh of course, how could I forget the cheetah is the fastest land animal? I have to correct you on the storing their food in the trees though. That's leopards. Cheetahs simply eat their prey as fast as possible before any other predators discover it and try (and usually succeed) to steal it.

About dolphins: I have heard, though haven't confirmed, that they are the only species other than humans that sometimes mate purely for pleasure, not just for procreation.

I've heard that too, but I've also heard about some monkeys once, that don't mate just for procreation either. But I can't remember anything specific, and I'm not sure if it's true. I think I read that they also mated when scared. Shocked

I'm not really sure if I have a favorite animal, but if I did, it would probably have to be the horse. Not only are they useful, but their loyalty and intelligence could put any dog to shame. Wink
Following behind would be cats and raccoons.

Rather then fantasy, they can be consider as more mythological. The Far Eastern countries such as China and Korea have legends of vampire cats similar to bats and such in Western cultures.
I would like to recomend a book if I may intitled "Half Human Half Animal" by Jamie Hall. A suberb reference book which gives the legends and discriptions of were- creatures from around the world: Wolves, Foxes, Cats, Snakes,Hyenas, Goats even Donkeys. It also gives a guide to what books and films these creatures have appeared in through the years. all in all a very interesting read. Curious Wassat

I am sorry I recommended that book without checking the price and availability at Amazon. co.uk/com. It would seem it is currently out of print and the few that are available are priced between $67 to $170. It may be better to find it via your local library. Mad

I wouldn't say this is my favorite animal, per se, but definitely high on the list of favorites... The Naked Mole Rat

Why do I like Naked Mole Rats? Because they're really freakin' ugly as sin, and that's just right up my alley.

A couple facts about Naked Mole Rats:

-It is only one of two known mammal species with eusocial behavior, meaning they have a hiearchical social structure similar to ants and bees, with one breeding female (or "Queen"), about one to three breeding males (the queens "harem"), and numerous non-breeding soldiers and workers exisiting as a large colony. The only other known mammal species with this trait is the Damaraland mole rat.

-Live primarily in the dryer grasslands of East Africa, specifically in parts of Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia.

-Although a member of the rodent family, they are actually more closely related to chinchillas, guinea pigs, and porcupines, so they're not really rats nor moles.

-Have a nearly cold-blooded metabolism, and are capable of slowing or shutting down their metabolisms periodically when food becomes scarce.

-Primarily feed off of underground tubers.

-Other names include "sand puppies" and "desert mole rats"

well, i suppose thats because, like most moles(mole rat or not) it would be sensitive to light, and has them squinted to shut out the rays.

their eyes are really, really tiny, and they are mostly blind anyway... one of the theories is that underground, their eyes serve to sense changes in air currents, such as when a predator digs up one of their tunnels, they can tell if surface air is suddenly streaming through a tunnel where it shouldn't be. They largely navigate by using their whiskers to feel around in the dark, since they usually never migrate to the surface, plus they have a really good sense of smell.
