Okay. First off. Let me throw it out there, that I'm not a racist.
I support Obama as president and think its awesome that we have a black president for a change and one that has gotten a second term too.

But something that has gotten me bothered a bit.

Why does Marvel comics insist on having Black actors replace white character roles??

Examples:
Nick Fury - don't need to tell you that he's a white old guy but played by Samuel Jackson. (which by the way did a good job on the role).
(he was also played by David Hasselhoff)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nick_fury
I love samuel jackson but still dont feel great about him being Nick Fury.

Kingpin - who is clearly a fat white guy.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingpin_(comics)
Was made black in the old daredevil movie 2003
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daredevil_(film)

And the news has JamieFox playing Electro in Spiderman2.
http://www.movieweb.com/news/jamie-foxx-may-be-electro-in-the-amazing-spider-man-2

Now. If we're doing the color switch ups.

Should we reboot "Blades" to have a white actor instead of wesley snipes?
Or maybe Black Panther
Which by the way is an avengers character. be changed up to be a white guy instead?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Panther_(comics)
Or maybe the new X-men movie we should change up Storm and have her be played by Angelia Jolie. ! (she would make a great Storm).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Storm_(Marvel_Comics)

It's not like Marvel comics doesn't already have enough black characters that they need to change white characters to black characters.

I just think its rather confusing to the readers and fans of these comic characters to see these dramatic changes. And I don't like that.

It just seems a little weird to me.

*note. I would equally be troubled and upset if they had somebody else be Blade and Storm and Black Panther.

I would be upset to see DC follow this route and switch Superman,Batman, and Wonderwoman up being played by an 'alternate racial or ethnic actor. Asian Superman anybody? Irish redhead Wonder Woman? African American Superman?? (OH wait they did have "Steel" in the Death of Superman story arc. BUT at least it made sense there.

OH wait! I just realized DC is having a black Perry White for the new superman movie. omg!

I forgot they also had Halle Barry play catwoman. I never actually saw that movie.

My feelings on this topic are kind like feelings I had when Galactus was being played by a Giant Cloud in Fantastic Four!

What are your thoughts?

I guess it wouldn't matter if you never read the comics. And grew up with the characters.

All I can say is god help us all if Disney decided to take control of DC comics too. I don't think anyone would hear the end of it to all the fanboys and we got enough out of the marvel variety.

In most cases you'll likely find it's not a point of making the character black or white, but putting the right actor into the role regardless of colour. I don't claim to know most of the character very well beyond the roles portrayed in the movies, but just take a moment to look at the actors not as black or white, but as people who can convey the right attitude desired by the director.

If, for example, Hugh Jackman was crap at playing Wolverine and Will Smith excelled at the position, which do you think would be the more likely choice in order to ensure greater revenue and success? These people make movies to make money, and to make money they need to be good, and by sticking a crappy actor in a role, it hinders the movie's chance of success. With that said, it is a logical move to put an actor best suited to the role in terms of actoring prowess regardless of their colour.

As for Galactus being a "giant cloud". That simply boils down to artistic license/interpretation and reimagining. It also, once again, falls into the realm of "which is going to make us more money?". In this day, which is likely to make more money? Awe inspiring cloud of ominous-ness or giant pink guy. No doubt there are also other factors that played into that decision such as plausability. Don't forget that movies are made on a budget and some effects are cannot be implemented due to budget constraints or are simply beyond the capabilities of the resources on hand these days.

You guys have good points.

For me its not about the actors colors.

It's about the 'changes'. Changes are hard to accept, when you're used to something a certain way. And it may not be the best change.

Like Wonder Woman without her panties. I didn't like the idea of a WonderWoman with pants. That's too much of a radical change for me.

Or Superman without his red underwear. Again- that's too much of a change for me too.

I'm having difficulties accepting that still.

Also- having a hard time with the new Superman movie not using John Williams for their scores.
